EV Charger Replacement and upgrades

EV charger replacement is often quicker than a new installation, because the circuit is already there. For homes and businesses across Tonbridge, Sevenoaks and West Malling, New EV Chargers Tonbridge tests that circuit first, then removes the old unit and fits a new smart charger in its place.

If the existing cable, protection or earthing is not up to the new charger, we tell you before any work starts. Once fitted, the new charger is tested, set up in its app and covered by a new certificate.

Why Choose Us

A replacement is only as good as the circuit it connects to. Rather than swapping one box for another, we test the insulation, the earth fault loop and the protective devices on the existing circuit, and check the cable is rated for the new charger. That way a faulty circuit is found before it fails again, and you have test results on paper. The work is certified under our NICEIC registration.

Common Reasons to Replace a Charger

Most charger replacements we are asked about fall into a few groups: the unit has a fault that keeps returning, the manufacturer has stopped supporting its app, it is not a smart charger and cannot use cheaper overnight tariffs, or the household wants a tethered cable or a faster unit for a new car. An EV charger upgrade is also the moment to add load management if the house supply is tight.

How We Can Help

Send us a photo of the charger you have now, the label underneath it and your consumer unit, and tell us what it is or is not doing.

We can often tell from that whether a straight swap is likely or whether the circuit will need work, and we will give you an idea of what is involved before arranging a visit.

What Happens on the Day

We isolate the charger circuit and test it before touching the old unit, so we know what we are reconnecting to. The old charger comes off the wall or post and the new one goes on, usually in the same position so the existing cable can be used.

If the new unit needs a different mounting position, a longer cable or additional protection, that will have been agreed with you beforehand. The new charger is then tested, connected to your Wi-Fi and checked with your car plugged in before we leave.

Why Replace Rather Than Repair

Some charger faults can be repaired, but older units often need parts or software support that is no longer available.

A new smart charger gives you current safety features, scheduled charging for cheaper tariffs and an app that is still maintained. Because the circuit is tested as part of the replacement, you also find out whether the original installation is still sound, which is worth knowing for any charger that has been outside for years.
